Tourism in Segala, deep in the countryside, between the Aveyron gorges and the Viaur valley

Visitez Taurines, Centrès

Visitez Taurines, Centrès

In this hamlet with Gallo-Roman origins, prevails the medieval era, mainly through its 13th century castle!

A hamlet built on a legend...

According to a local legend, it is said Taurines's primitive church was founded after a grave containing bones was discovered. Supposedly, its location was indicated by a bull's odd behaviour : it was scratching the ground at that precise spot (hence the name of "Taurines", bull meaning "taureau" in French). The population believed the bones belonged to holy body's remains, what was never confirmed by the Church.

... you can explore & unveil its heritage!

Take time to stroll in the hamlet & try to spot the Gallo-Roman altar or the castle's gate... that is no longer in the castle.

However, we can guarantee you will easily find the Taurines Castle, that hosts a major contemporary art exhibition each summer.

You want to go for a walk?

In Centrès District, the shores of the Viaur & the Céor Rivers were the perfect locations for numerous mills, but also glassworks during the "Ancien Régime" (from 16th to 18th century): discover some of the mills walking the path Chemin de la farine that starts in Taurines (description in French).

Travel the rest of the district, so that you can see:

> Tayac & its 19th century church, with panelling, an altarpiece & a 13th century reliquary cross.

> The cross of La Pierre Plantée (locality) : it would originally indicate the burial place of a Roman or English general. It is similar to schist cross called "from the Lévézou region".

> The cross of Ginestet (locality) : beautiful sculpture work on a schist stone. In the forefront of the pedestral, a small niche probably sheltered a statuette that is no longer there. Nice houses & outbuidings from 18th-19th centuries.

& a last anecdote before setting off:

In Moulin de l'Herm (private property), the last (unreported) miller agreed to grind only by night not to draw the attention.
